Ahead of the forthcoming Golden (50th) Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA), Dr Oludayo Taiwo Gideon, known in travel industry circles as GidiBoss, has embarked on a series of engagements across the association’s zones in what stakeholders have described as a deliberate effort to strengthen institutional cohesion and inter-zonal partnerships.

Gideon, a travel industry leader, and Chief Executive Officer of Aeroport Group, and former two-term Lagos Zonal Public Relations Officer, began his engagements in Lagos, where the Zone held its AGM marking the end of the tenure of its outgone executive officers.

The transition, overseen by respected Board of Trustees members, including; Mr Daisi Olotu and Mrs Durosinmi Etti, featured formal handover proceedings, valedictory remarks, and presentation of certificates of service to executives, who had completed their terms.

At the Eastern Zone AGM in Port Harcourt, he witnessed the election of a new executive committee and congratulated both outgone and incoming officers for their stewardship and commitment to advancing professional standards within the region.

A notable highlight of the Eastern Zone meeting was the emergence of Mr Emmanuel Ossai, one of Gideon’s former students, as Zonal Public Relations Officer — a development viewed by many as reflective of sustained mentorship and capacity development within Nigeria’s travel industry.

Industry stakeholders present at the Port Harcourt gathering, which featured participation from regulators and airline representatives, emphasised the importance of structured communication, regulatory alignment, and improved coordination across zones.

Gideon’s engagements further extended to the Northern Zone in Kano and the Abuja Zone, where leadership transitions and stakeholders’ interactions focused on strengthening information flow, reinforcing compliance standards, and enhancing the association’s national representation.

He was also at the Western Zone AGM in Ibadan, where he monitored the transition, with new officers elected. He had a constructive engagement with stakeholders at the zone.

During his tenure as Lagos Zonal Public Relations Officer, Gideon made some strides, including representing NANTA at the World Travel Market (WTM) London in 2024, where he coordinated the media in furtherance of the association’s international visibility.

It is to his credit that the visual content from the Nigerian delegation was subsequently utilised by the WTM media team in promotional materials in the 2025 edition of the yearly event, underscoring Nigeria’s growing presence within the global travel trade ecosystem.

Speaking during interactions across the zones, Gideon stressed the need for stronger inter-zonal communication, institutional continuity, and responsible representation of members’ interests at both national and international platforms.

He is a cleared nominee for the position of National Publicity Secretary of NANTA, subject to the ongoing electoral process.

The forthcoming 50th AGM of NANTA is expected to convene travel professionals, airline operators, regulators, and tourism stakeholders from across Nigeria in what is anticipated to be a defining moment in the association’s history.

Nigeria’s travel sector moves millions of passengers annually, but the infrastructure holding it together is often invisible, underfunded, and misunderstood. The gap between demand and capacity has a cost.

For twenty years, Finchglow Travels has been absorbing it, pricing the fares that travel agents quote, shouldering the foreign exchange volatility that would otherwise ground small agencies, and negotiating with airlines on behalf of an industry too fragmented to negotiate for itself.

This year, Finchglow Travels marks its 20th anniversary not with fanfare for its own sake, but as a moment to hold a mirror up to an ecosystem it has quietly held together, and to name, plainly, what a travel consolidator is and why Nigeria cannot afford to keep misunderstanding one.

In global aviation markets, consolidators are well understood. They sit between airlines and the travel trade, aggregating inventory, negotiating contracted fares unavailable on the open market, and providing the financial and operational scaffolding that allows thousands of independent travel agents to compete.

In Nigeria, that understanding has never quite taken root. The result is a structural vulnerability that the sector has only recently begun to acknowledge.

Finchglow Travel’s Managing Director, Ezekiel Ikotun, is direct about what that gap costs and what closing it requires.

“Our goal is to educate our customers, equip them with the right knowledge, and make them global players. We don’t just sell tickets, we consolidate travel into opportunity, savings, and innovation.”

Finchglow’s 20-year journey is the story of building that infrastructure almost entirely without a template in a market where airlines, agents, and corporates each operated in silos, where forex policy could reprice a ticket overnight, and where the knowledge needed to run a sustainable travel business was neither documented nor distributed.

Today, the company powers travel for corporate organisations, retail travel agents, and consumers across Nigeria and beyond. Airlines trust it as a settlement partner. Agents rely on it for access to fares, systems, and support they cannot access alone. Corporates use it to manage complex travel programmes in a market where complexity is the norm.

The 20th anniversary arrives at a turbulent moment for Nigerian aviation. Foreign exchange instability has made airline pricing volatile and settlement uncertain. The margins in travel remain razor-thin. Agents face staffing constraints, limited access to working capital, and widening gaps in digital capability. International airlines continue to weigh Nigeria’s operating environment against their global route priorities.

Group Managing Director, Finchglow Holdings, Bankole Bernard, reiterates this: “Airlines are protecting themselves against instability and uncertainty. Broader foreign exchange and policy challenges largely drive fare volatility and most people operating in this sector are one bad quarter away from finding that out.”

Finchglow’s response to these pressures has been structural, not reactive. By leveraging dollar inflows from its corporate client base and negotiating dual-currency settlement arrangements with airline partners, the company has created a buffer that extends beyond itself, allowing agents in its network to transact in naira while Finchglow manages the underlying dollar obligations. In a market where forex exposure has collapsed more than one travel business, this is not a small thing.

The company has also invested in building capacity across the sector. Finchglow hosts webinars and live events, publishes weekly industry intelligence, and runs online training designed to narrow the knowledge gap that makes Nigerian travel agents vulnerable. Three live editions ran in 2025 alone, with plans to deepen the programme’s reach across more cities in 2026.

In Nigerian business, longevity in a volatile sector is not incidental; it is evidence of adaptation, of relationships that held, of a business model that remained relevant through deregulation, a pandemic, and a currency crisis that reshaped the economics of international travel for agents across the country.

Finchglow Holdings Group Managing Director, Bankole Bernard, has consistently called for greater government engagement on regulatory inconsistencies and increased domestic investment in aviation infrastructure, including Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul facilities, to reduce the capital flight that continues to weaken Nigeria’s position in regional aviation. These are not peripheral concerns. They are structural conditions that determine whether Nigerian travel businesses thrive or merely survive.

That Finchglow has done more than survive and has brought a significant portion of Nigeria’s travel trade with it is what the 20th anniversary is really marking.

As Nigeria’s travel ecosystem continues to navigate structural headwinds, Finchglow enters its third decade with the same posture it has held for twenty years: in the background, holding the infrastructure together, and insisting that an informed, well-resourced travel trade is not a luxury it is the foundation on which the entire sector stands.

to suspend all activities of the National Technical/Mirror Committee (TC/MC), especially requesting nominations of its members into its Sub-Committees.

Instead, it urged that SON should take urgent and appropriate actions to return to TC/MC on Tourism Related Services to the path sanctity, and respect for the rule of law by carrying along all the stakeholders in its activities to avoid sending the wrong signals to the international community and incurring its wrath.

In the letter signed by its President, Dr Aliyu Ajayi Badaki, FTAN expressed concerns and disappointment regarding the recent circular issued by the National Technical/Mirror Committee (TC/MC) requesting nominations into Sub-Committees.

In the letter titled: Re: Premature call for nominations into the TC/MC on Tourism and Related Services – A Breach of Trust and Procedural Lapses, FTAN urged the DG of SON to suspend all activities regarding these nominations.

FTAN directed all its member associations to suspend any participation or submission of nominations to the TC/MC committees as requested.

FTAN in the letter stated that the Federation will not be part of this committee until: ‘‘The promised follow-up meeting is held; and the leadership of the TC/MC is dissolved and re-constituted to ensure it aligns with the right process and industry-wide confidence.

‘‘And until a member who has made immense contribution and is ready to selflessly volunteer to Standards, in line with the provision of PPDNNS, 5.7.1.1c, is considered to head the committee.’’

The Federation further noted; ‘‘while FTAN does not seek to dictate the internal affairs of SON, “we have a duty, as critical stakeholder, to ensure that the process governing our industry is led by individuals with proven commitment and zero conflict of interest.

‘‘Following formal protests by FTAN, a meeting was held with SON that ended inconclusively, with a clear promise from SON to convene a follow-up meeting to resolve the grievances raised by the Federation.’’

FTAN also maintained that by calling for nominations while the dispute remains officially unresolved, SON is disregarding the agreed-upon process for reconciliation.

Pending the resolution of the subsisting matter and issues raised by it, the Federation stated clearly the following demands on its members to stay clear of SON and TC/MC; ‘‘In the spirit of unity and oneness, the Federation hereby requests that: No Member Association should submit any names or engage with the provided Google Form link or any other communication from the TC/MC;

‘‘That any communication received from SON regarding these nominations should be forwarded to the FTAN Secretariat for documentation; That FTAN maintains a united front to ensure that the private sector is not sidelined or treated as a mere “rubber stamp” in the development of standards that directly affect our businesses.

“The strength of our Federation lies in our ability to speak with one voice. To participate in this process prematurely is to weaken our bargaining power and jeopardize the long-term interests of the Nigerian Tourism Industry”.

The Federation further assured that it remains committed to professional collaboration with SON, provided it is built on mutual respect and the inclusion of the organised private sector as a primary stakeholder.

The letter to the Director General of SON reads in full: “The leadership of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), the apex umbrella body for the organized private sector in tourism, writes to express its profound disappointment regarding the recent circular issued by the National Technical/Mirror Committee (TC/MC) requesting nominations into Sub-Committees.

This action is not only premature but directly contravenes the spirit of our ongoing dialogue and the explicit promise made by SON management to resolve pending grievances before further action.

Breach of the Agreement to Reconvene.

As you are aware, our previous meeting regarding the unilateral inauguration of this TC/MC ended with a clear consensus: the meeting was inconclusive. SON promised to convene a follow-up session to address the Federation’s concerns and harmonize representation. By proceeding with nominations, SON has bypassed the reconciliation process, undermining the trust necessary for a public-private partnership.

Concerns Regarding Vetting and Professional Standards.

During our last engagement, we highlighted a critical lapse in the committee’s formation: the failure to vet nominees via Curriculum Vitae (CV). It is ironic that an organization dedicated to “Standards” would admit individuals into a high-level Technical Committee without verifying their current expertise.

A case in point is the FTAN representative in the main committee who was admitted without submitting his CV and subsequently nearly embarrassed Nigeria at the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO). This individual opted out at the point of assuming the Chairmanship, citing a lack of interest in SON activities. It took the urgent intervention of the current FTAN President to mandate the current Chairman to bridge that gap. Furthermore, this same representative failed to attend a critical Standard Validation meeting in Benin Republic in the month of July last year, causing Nigeria to lose its voice at that forum. We cannot allow a repeat of such professional negligence.

Conflict of Interest and Leadership Integrity.

SON previously stated that care was taken in selecting the TC/MC leadership to avoid conflict of interest. However, we must point out that the purported Chairman occupies multiple roles as a lecturer, practitioner, and operator—a situation that defeats the very purpose of neutrality.

Furthermore, we are concerned about the “interest” driving the current leadership. This same individual has, in the past, refused to participate in TC/MC meetings on the grounds that he cannot make sacrifice since it was a voluntary assignment. It is baffling that an individual who refused to contribute to the committee’s foundation is now positioned to head it.

Our Position:

While FTAN does not seek to dictate the internal affairs of SON, we have a duty, as critical stakeholder, to ensure that the process governing our industry is led by individuals with proven commitment and zero conflict of interest.

Consequently, FTAN has directed all its member associations to suspend any participation or submission of nominations to the TC/MC committees as requested. The Federation will not be part of this committee until: The promised follow-up meeting is held; The leadership of the TC/MC is dissolved and re-constituted to ensure it aligns with the right process and industry-wide confidence;

A member who has made immense contribution and is ready to selflessly volunteer to Standards, in line with the provision of PPDNNS, 5.7.1.1c, is considered to head the committee.

We urge you to suspend all activities regarding these nominations and return to the path of doing the right thing that will along all the stakeholders.

International tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) grew by 4% in 2025, as most destinations worldwide posted solid results. According to the first World Tourism Barometer of the year, an estimated 1.52 billion international tourists were recorded globally in 2025, almost 60 million more than in 2024.

These numbers reflect a return to pre-pandemic growth trends, closer to the 5% average increase per year between 2009 and 2019. Results were driven by strong demand, robust performance from large source markets and the ongoing recovery of destinations in Asia and the Pacific. Increased air connectivity and enhanced visa facilitation also supported international travel in 2025.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Alnuwais said: “Demand for travel remained high throughout 2025, despite high inflation in tourism services and uncertainty from geopolitical tensions. We expect this positive trend to continue into 2026 as global economy is expected to remain steady and destinations still lagging behind pre pandemic levels fully recover.”

We expect this positive trend to continue into 2026 as global economy is expected to remain steady and destinations still lagging behind pre pandemic levels fully recover

Africa sees strongest results in 2025; Asia and the Pacific rebounds

The World Tourism Barometer by UN Tourism provides comprehensive data for the sector by region, sub-region and destination. Key takeaways from this edition show:

Europe, the world’s largest destination region, recorded 793 million international tourists in 2025, a 4% increase from 2024 and 6% more than in 2019. Western Europe (+5%) and Southern Mediterranean Europe (+3%) saw robust performance. Central and Eastern Europe rebounded strongly (+6%) though arrivals remained 9% below 2019 levels.

The Americas (218 million) recorded 1% growth last year, with mixed results across subregions. After a strong first half of 2025, the region saw small declines in Q3 and Q4, partly due to weak results in the United States. South America (+7%) and Central America (+5%) led results by subregion. Some destinations in the Caribbean (+0%) were affected by Hurricane Melissa in the last quarter of the year.

Africa (81 million) saw an 8% increase in arrivals in 2025, with particularly strong results in North Africa (+11%).

The Middle East recorded 3% growth in 2025, equivalent to 39% above pre-pandemic levels, the strongest results relative to 2019. The region virtually reached the mark of 100 million international visitors in 2025.

Arrivals in Asia and the Pacific (331 million) grew 6% last year but are still 9% below 2019 levels as the region continued to rebound. North-East Asia led performance with 13% growth over 2024, while South Asia recovered pre-pandemic levels.

Most destinations report positive results for 2025

After solid growth in 2024, most destinations continued to enjoy strong results in 2025.

Among destination with available data for the twelve months of 2025 several show double-digit growth in international arrivals, among which Brazil (+37%), Egypt (+20%), Morocco (+14%) and Seychelles (+13%). Destinations reporting data through November also saw strong growth, including Bhutan (+30%), Iceland (+29%), Guyana (+24%), South Africa (+19%) and Japan (+17%).

The positive results in international arrivals last year are also reflected in other industry indicators. As shown in the UN Tourism Data Dashboard, both international air capacity and air passenger traffic grew 7% through October 2025 (IATA). Global occupancy in accommodation establishments reached 66% in November 2025, matching the levels of November 2024 (based on STR data).

Export revenues from tourism reached a record $2.2 trillion in 2025

Monthly data show strong visitor spending throughout 2025, with preliminary estimates pointing at $1.9 trillion in international tourism receipts globally, a 5% increase from 2024.

Total export revenues from tourism (including receipts and passenger transport) are estimated at $2.2 trillion in 2025 based on available data. Other key takeaways include:

International tourism receipts saw extraordinary growth in 2025 following an already strong 2024, with many destinations posting a higher increase in receipts than arrivals.

Destinations reporting solid growth in receipts during the first ten to twelve months of 2025 were Morocco (+19%), the Republic of Korea (+18%), Egypt (+17%), Mongolia (+15%), Japan (+14%), Latvia (+11%) and Mauritius (+10%), all calculated in local currencies.

Among the world’s top tourism earners, the United Kingdom and France (both +9%), as well as Spain (+7%) and Türkiye (+6%), saw solid growth in the first ten to twelve months of 2025 compared to the same months of 2024.

Data on international tourism expenditure reflects the same trend of strong demand, especially among large source markets such as the United States (+8%), France (+4%), as well as Spain (+16%) and the Republic of Korea (+10%).

Outlook for 2026: continued growth amid a challenging environment

International tourism is expected to grow 3% to 4% in 2026 compared to 2025, assuming that Asia and the Pacific continue to recover, global economic conditions remain favourable and geopolitical conflicts do not escalate. Uncertainty from current geopolitical tensions and conflicts pose an increasing risk for tourism in 2026.

UN Tourism’s prospects for 2026 reflect a normalization of growth rates after a strong rebound in international arrivals in 2023 (+34%) and 2024 (+11%) and a 4% increase in 2025.

This positive outlook is confirmed by the latest UN Tourism Confidence Index and survey among the Panel of Experts. 58% of experts foresee better or much better performance in 2026 than in 2025, while 31% expect similar results and 11% worse.

Survey respondents pointed to economic factors, high travel costs, and geopolitical risks as the main challenges international tourism could face in 2026. These factors were viewed as the most relevant by about half of all experts.

While headline inflation has receded globally in 2025, inflation in tourism-related services remains elevated by historical standards. Against this backdrop, tourists are expected to continue to seek value for money according to the Panel of Experts.

While positive prospects for the global economy and lower oil prices could favour tourism performance in 2026, uncertainty derived from geopolitical risks and ongoing conflicts, trade tensions and extreme weather events could weigh on traveller confidence.

International tourism in 2026 will be driven by solid consumer demand, enhanced air connectivity and growing outbound travel from emerging markets. Major international events such as the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics (Italy) and the FIFA World Cup 2026 (Canada, United States and Mexico) will also contribute to international travel.

Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have resolved to revive dedicated tourism information desks at major airports across the country. This is part of the strategic move by NTDA to unlock Nigeria’s tourism potential.

This commitment was given during a visit by the Director-General of NTDA, Dr Olayiwola Awakan, to the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, at FAAN headquarters, Lagos.

Awakan stressed that airports represent the first and most critical point of contact for international visitors, making them essential gateways to Nigeria’s tourism experience.

According to him; “Tourism is about movement, and FAAN plays a huge role in that because for anyone coming into the country, airports are their first point of contact.”

He described Nigeria as; “sitting on a gold mine,” of tourism opportunities in every region — from cultural heritage and natural landscapes to eco-tourism and adventure destinations. He, therefore, called for a powerful combination of compelling storytelling, reliable data, and seamless travel experiences to reposition the nation as a world-class destination.

Central to the discussion was Awakan’s strong appeal for the return of tourism information desks at airports, which would offer arriving passengers immediate access to guides, maps, attraction highlights, and local travel options.

Kuku welcomed the renewed partnership, describing aviation and tourism as; “naturally interconnected.” She commended Awakan for his consistent support and friendship over the years.

She also affirmed FAAN’s readiness to collaborate closely with NTDA to enhance passenger experience, upgrade airport infrastructure, and drive growth in both domestic and international tourism arrivals.

The two leaders established a joint committee to coordinate data sharing and oversee ongoing collaborative initiatives between the two agencies.

The renewed focus on airport-based tourism support is expected to create a more welcoming first impression for visitors and help showcase Nigeria’s rich diversity right from the moment of arrival.

The President, Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), Dr Aliyu Badaki has charged both the government and private sector to focus on recovery, growth and strategic partnership in order to grow Nigerian tourism in 2026.

Badaki, who gave this charge in his 2026 message, said the new year holds a lot of promises for the people and the sector.

While welcoming everyone to the New Year, Badaki extended his warm greetings to all stakeholders, practitioners, investors, and advocates within Nigeria’s tourism ecosystem.

He said: “This new year greets us not merely as a continuation of our journey, but as a decisive moment; one that calls for alignment, execution, and collective responsibility.’’

He expressed his appreciation to the Nigerian tourism family for holding strong and firm in the outgone year in the face of challenges faced by them, the sector and the nation.

‘‘I express my profound appreciation to members of the Nigerian tourism family. Your resilience, commitment, and belief in the sector despite economic headwinds, regulatory pressures, and structural constraints remain the backbone of our industry,’’ he said.

He continued further: “I particularly acknowledge our tourism ambassadors at home and in the diaspora who continue to project Nigeria’s story, culture, and hospitality with pride on the global stage.

‘‘There is no denying that 2025 was a challenging year commercially for many operators. However, history will record it as a year of groundwork and recalibration. It was a period of rebuilding trust, strengthening engagement, and reopening critical lines of collaboration between Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), international development partners, and the organised private sector.”

FTAN President stated that the bridges rebuilt in the latter half of 2025 have laid the foundation for a more coordinated and purpose-driven tourism economy.

Badaki noted that it is within this context that the Tourism Transformation Mandate (TTM) becomes both relevant and urgent.

He noted: ‘‘TTM is not a slogan; but a call to action anchored on policy alignment, private sector repositioning, investment readiness, human capacity development, destination competitiveness, and measurable outcomes.’’

He added that TTM reflects a collective resolve to move Nigerian tourism from potential to performance.

According to him: ‘‘2026, therefore, must be a year of recovery, consolidation, and growth.

‘‘A year where: Policy frameworks translate into operational clarity; Partnerships evolve into co-investment and co-delivery; Standards replace informality; Data, skills, and professionalism drive decision-making; and Tourism asserts itself as a serious contributor to GDP diversification, job creation, and national branding.”

Badaki said FTAN remains unwavering in its commitment to this transformation, stressing that the Federation will continue to serve as a unifying platform for advocacy, engagement, capacity building, and strategic collaboration, ensuring that the private sector is not only heard but positioned as a true co-driver of national tourism development.

He explained: ‘‘As we navigate 2026, we must also be honest about the realities before us: rising operating costs, regulatory overlaps, security perceptions, infrastructure gaps, skills shortages, and the need for improved ease of doing business. Yet, these challenges also present an opportunity to reset systems, strengthen governance, embrace innovation, and rebuild confidence across the value chain.’’

While assuring of the opportunities ahead, Badaki urged everyone to move forward and let mutual respect define its engagements.

He said every stakeholder, large or small, has a role to play, a value to add, and a responsibility to uphold standards.

Badaki tasked the tourism stakeholders to commit, collectively in making Nigeria a destination of choice; ‘‘leveraging on its diversity as strength, its culture as capital, and the people as its greatest asset.’’

He also charged both the government and operators on entrenching regulation and standardisation noting; ‘‘the role of standardisation is the foundation of tourism development in our sector. Therefore, both the standard body and the Federation will ensure a good working relationship to actualise this vision.’’

“Ṅkan tí à ńwá lọ Ṣókótó, wá ní àpo ṣòkòtò.”

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭.

This proverb framed my thoughts as I stood on the historic grounds of Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island, on the 27th day of December, in the year of our Lord 2025. It is not a saying of complacency; it is a declaration of abundance. It reminds us that Nigeria already possesses what many nations are searching for, culture, history, creativity, resilience, and identity. We have no business chasing what is not lost.

To be among the photographers documenting the Adamu Orisa Play, staged this year to honour departed pillars of Lagos and Nigeria, is an honour that will remain etched in my memory. This was not merely an event. It was a ritual of remembrance, a civic thanksgiving, and a cultural homecoming.

I arrived at TBS the night before and stayed until about 2 a.m., walking the grounds in quiet contemplation, studying angles, anticipating movement, imagining light. I wanted to know where history would best reveal itself through my lens.

That night, providence placed Mr. Seni Makanjuola, one of the engine rooms of the Lagos State Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Arts, in my path. With warmth and efficiency, he ensured my crew and I received our passes. In moments like that, one is reminded that culture survives not only through spectacle, but through the diligence of those who quietly sustain it.

By 9 a.m., I was back at TBS. Even then, Lagos had already announced herself. Roads were jam-parked, and I walked from Independence Bridge to the Square, camera in hand, spirit light.

Security was firm and reassuring. Military men and police officers were stationed everywhere, ensuring safety for the general public and for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Access was smooth. Order prevailed. And then I saw the stands. They were nearly full. I paused, not in surprise, but in awe. Lagosians had come out in their numbers. Culture had called, and the people had answered.

The Yoruba say, “Ìròhìn kì í tó àfọ̀jú bá.” 𝐍𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬.

I plunged into work immediately. My intention was clear: to produce a book on the Adamu Orisa Play, its history, its meaning, and its place in the evolving story of Lagos.

As I moved around the stands, Lagos revealed herself fully. Men and women dressed in splendid Yoruba attire, aso-oke, adire, lace, damask, paired with elegant sunshades, carefully chosen shoes, and matching bags. It was colour upon colour. Confidence upon confidence.

𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲, 𝐄𝐤𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰

To understand the Adamu Orisa Play is to journey into the spiritual and historical heart of Lagos.

Adamu Orisa predates its modern staging by centuries. Oral tradition situates its first formal performances in mid-19th-century Lagos, during the era of early Obas such as Oba Akitoye and Oba Dosunmu. This was a period of profound transition, political, spiritual, and social.

Adamu Orisa emerged as a sacred ritual performance, created to honour the passing of revered leaders and elders whose lives shaped the moral and civic order of Lagos. It was conceived not as entertainment, but as a rite of passage, a way of guiding the departed into the ancestral realm while restoring balance among the living.

In its earliest form, Adamu Orisa was community-bound. It took place within palace courtyards and sacred routes on Lagos Island. Participation was restricted, movements were deliberate, and symbolism was paramount. Every chant, step, and costume carried encoded meaning.

From this ritual soil grew one of Lagos’ most enduring cultural institutions

From Adamu Orisa emerged Eyo, not merely a masquerade, but a living philosophy. Clad in flowing white robes (agbada funfun), wide-brimmed hats (àkètè), and carrying the sacred òpá bàtà, the Eyo represents transition, from life to ancestry, from silence to continuity, from the visible to the unseen.

Historically, Eyo festivals were performed to:

Honour the death of an Oba of Lagos, commemorate the passing of distinguished chiefs, and prepare the spiritual ground for the installation of a new Oba.

Eyo is authority in motion. Tradition demands reverence. Footwear must be removed, and the òpá bàtà enforces respect without words.

Over time, the institution became structured into recognised groups with defined lineage and roles.

The five principal Eyo groups traditionally recognised are:

Eyo Adimu, the most sacred authority

Eyo Laba (Agere), the path-opener

Eyo Oniko, guardian of discipline

Eyo Ologede, symbol of fertility and continuity

Eyo Agere, reflecting the fluidity of oral tradition

In contemporary Lagos, additional recognised groups, including Eyo Elemoro, identified by its pink hat, participate under strict traditional regulation.

Today, there are over seven registered and traditionally recognised Eyo groups, their legitimacy rooted in lineage, history, and ritual continuity.

The 2025 Adamu Orisa Play carried profound significance. It was staged to honour towering figures in Lagos’ political and social history, all now ancestors:

Mobolaji Johnson, the first Military Governor of Lagos State

Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, the first civilian Governor of Lagos State

Chief Michael Otedola, former Governor of Lagos State

Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, Iya Oloja General and mother of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

These were not ordinary names. They were builders of modern Lagos, figures whose lives shaped governance, commerce, and the soul of the city. To honour them through Adamu Orisa was to acknowledge that leadership, too, must pass through ritual remembrance.

What made the 2025 Adamu Orisa Play extraordinary was its intentional relocation, from sacred inner spaces to the civic grandeur of Tafawa Balewa Square. This was not dilution. It was declaration. By situating Adamu Orisa within Detty December, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu affirmed that culture is not frozen in time. It can breathe, evolve, and still remain sacred.

One Eyo group followed another, measured steps, chanting voices, ancestral authority unfolding before tens of thousands. Old and young alike eagerly sought photographs with the Eyos as they completed their parade.

Behind the splendour were tireless hands: the Chief of Staff, to Mr Governor, Mr. Tayo Ayinde present early to ensure order; Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, who stayed until after 1 a.m.;

Mr. Idris Aregbe, whom I left at 2 a.m. and met again at 9 a.m., having departed only at 6 a.m.

Culture does not happen by accident. It happens because some people refuse to sleep.

As I prepared to leave, I turned back and looked at the crowd. I saw pride. I saw belonging. I saw hope.

Lagos is blessed.

Nigeria is blessed.

𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲, 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐰𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐧𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭.

May Lagos continue to rise, a city where culture is preserved, celebrated, and rewarded.

May Nigeria remember herself, confident, just, and prosperous.

May those who lead us be granted wisdom beyond politics, vision beyond today, and courage beyond fear.

May Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu be strengthened to do more, to do better, and to leave legacies that time itself will applaud.

And may we, the witnesses and chroniclers, never grow tired of believing that Nigeria will be better, not someday, but in our lifetime.

All thanks to the unique, impressive and historic performances showcased in the course of the 10-day festivities that were embodiment of the suffusing and effervescent cultural heritage of the African continent in many respects.

One of the royals that graced this second edition of the annual Africa communal gathering that debuted last year, was Obongawan Barrister Marie Ikpeme Erete otherwise known as Queen Aruk II, from Eniong Abatim in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State of Nigeria.

Her presence not only enlivened the festival but added royal presence, colours, excellence, grace and poise that exuded majestic aura and power, to the festival. She bestrode the entire scene with a radiance and exotic presence that only a queen of her status could muster. She was the cynosure of all eyes through the event.

Her royal outfit and carriage were unique and attracted attention. She was perhaps the only royal at the event with an overwhelming presence that was magnified by the impressive number of people on her entourage, which indeed outnumbered every other royals at the cultural tourism celebration that was a showpiece of the best of Africa arts, music, culture, dance, drama, fashion, and lifestyle, culinary, entertainment and business that was signpost by the Business Unusual, Artificial Intelligence training sessions for African youths and Blossom, a workshop session dedicated to young entrepreneurial African women.

IPADA Initiatives as developed by Otunba Wanle Akinboboye, who is the President and Founder of La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, is a forum that welcomes mass exodus of Africans and lovers of Africa from across the world to Motherland; Africa, for an immersive experience of the cultural tourism offerings of the continent and also an avenue for them to contribute their resources, time and ideas to the development of the continent.

With Lagos and Abuja as the designated gateways to the continent, coming through Nigeria and then on a long-haul journey across the continent, all year round, with the IPADA Celebrations holding annually between November 28 and December 6, in Lagos, as an aggregation of the experiences that await visitors and African returnees to the different parts of the continent.

Queen Aruk II presence and theatrical showpiece displayed at this year’s gathering typified the essence of IPADA Celebrations by Akinboboye. She came prepared to showcase some of the memorable, exciting, colourful and entertaining cultural heritage, customs and traditions of her kingdom.

Her entourage was made of princes, princesses, friends from United Kingdom, maidens, and over 100 aides as well as a rich ensemble of cultural troupe that entertained the people, with end-to-end theatrics and cultural displays.

To show her selfless dedication to the promotion of her cultural heritage and kingdom, she arrived La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort, venue of this year’s festival, days ahead of the official December 28, 2025 arrival day. She and her entourage were warmly received and treated to the unique signature hospitality of La Campagne by Akinboboye and his team, all through their stay.

Nkugho on display

With her and her team, there was no dull moment, as it was back-to-back entertainment by her cultural troupe, which teamed up with Atunda Entertainment, the musical and entertainment arm of La Campagne, to treat the audience to a rich and colourful, as never witnessed before by many people, of the unique and impressive Efik cultural heritage.

One of such cultural activities that she treated the audience to was the Nkugho tradition, which is known as the Fattening Room tradition of Efik. Nkugho is the Efik traditional maiden ceremony. As disclosed by Queen Aruk II, it is the Finishing School for every Efik would-be bride.

The Efik maiden Fattening Room tradition is a pre-nuptial period where a maiden is secluded and prepared for marriage and womanhood. She is actually pampered and treated specially as she is well fed, massaged; beautified and treated with all the known and available beauty spices and ointments to make her glow and radiate beauty and attractive to the male beholder or groom to be as well as marriageable skills to manage her home, comfort and satiate her groom.

The audience was treated to this sacred traditional rite of marriage in a very unique and entertaining manner. This climaxed on the last day of the 10-day celebration, a with colourful dance procession, featuring elements such as the maiden sitting comfortably on a chair carried on the shoulders of hefty male bearers, flaunting her beauty to the admiration of the ecstatic audience.

She was presented before the queen, who was majestically adorned, to be certified ready for marriage. The rite came with ceremonial cultural dances and songs. A marriage proposal was added to the mix to make it a wholistic, however, symbolic event, for the education and entertainment of the spellbound audience.

Akinboboye: Enthused, advised women to imbibe lessons of Nkugho

An elated Akinboboye commended the queen for her presence and showpiece, especially the display of the rich Nkugho tradition that not only added colours to the event this year, but elevated its status and left memorable imprints in the hearts and minds of the audience.

He called on women to learn from this ancient tradition and apply the teachings to their marriage in order to save the marriage institution, which, he said is the pivot of the society.

Akinboboye added that Nkugho will be a permanent feature at the resort for young maidens in Africa and throughout the world to experience, so as to enjoy the beauty and knowledge of the tradition.

The Managing Director of Travelden (a subsidiary of Finchglow Holdings Ltd.), Gbenga Onitilo, has highlighted a significant threat to the long-term viability of the highly popular Detty December tourism season in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos.

His concern centres on excessive pricing and price gouging across the hospitality and entertainment sectors, just as his warning, primarily directed at the tourism and hospitality sectors, could threaten the entire tourism ecosystem and deprive Lagos and a few states of the gains of Detty December.

Fielding questions from journalists on Thursday in Lagos, argued that the excessive pricing is a short-sighted strategy that threatens the future sustainability of Detty December.

The season, which draws large numbers of diaspora Nigerians and international tourists, he noted risks pricing itself out of the market.

Onitilo lamented that many operators were exploiting visitors, especially those earning foreign currency, by charging exorbitant rates that are sometimes three to six times the regular seasonal adjustments.

He suggested that while the high influx of diaspora visitors in 2024 significantly boosted the local economy, the country did not adequately plan for this volume, creating a vacuum that led to widespread overpricing.

He said, “The overpricing is prevalent across hand short-let apartments, hiking their rates far beyond reasonable seasonal adjustments. Show promoters setting concert ticket and VIP table fees beyond accessible limits”.

He noted that the absence of government regulation and structured pricing allows these harmful practices to persist.

Onitilo’s specific concern about exploitation is compounded by the harsh national economic realities that inflate the underlying costs for service providers.

Primary concert tickets for Afrobeats festivals have been widely criticised for costing more than N5 million in some instances for a single standing ticket, effectively excluding the majority of the local fanbase.

He further stated that Detty December is caught between two forces: the macroeconomic crisis, which raises operational costs (justifying some price increases), and opportunistic overpricing of services, which Onitilo argues is the greater threat to the season’s longevity.

In a related development, the Group Managing Director of Finchglow Group, Mr Bankole Bernard, has weighed in on the high cost of domestic air tickets.

Speaking to journalists in his office on Thursday, stated that high ticket prices are, at the basic commercial level, a result of supply and demand.

He, however, blamed government policies, which he attributed to the factors that deliberately and artificially create the imbalance.

His argument is not a simple endorsement of the market forces, but a critique of the environment that allows airlines to charge exorbitant fares and still find customers.

Bernard acknowledged that airlines, both domestic and international, are driven by two commercial factors in their pricing: volume and yield.
