A small hotel owner with a unique approach to life and business leaves behind a legacy defined by his easy-going nature, deep family values, sharp wit, and genuine love for his community.

Marston who was born on the 26th of January 1945, was the kind of person who made everyone feel like an old friend. He had a warm smile and an easy laugh, always ready to chat or share a story. People were naturally drawn to his genuine happiness and way of bringing everyone together, whether you were a visitor or a neighbour. Many who came as guests to his hotel returned year after year, soon feeling more like family than tourists. There’s even an old postcard a guest created that says it all: “If you don’t know this man, you don’t know the Seychelles.”

… at the heart of hospitality space in La Digue

For decades, Marston was at the very heart of hospitality on La Digue. He ran his beloved small hotel and restaurant, ‘Chez Marston,’ side by side with the ‘Orchid’ hotel, which belonged to his wife, Laura, right next door. His restaurant drew regular excursion groups from across the islands, eager to experience his famous traditional Creole buffet.

… devoted to family

Family was always at the heart of Marston’s life. He stood fiercely loyal to his loved ones, always ready to stand side by side with them when they needed him. His deep love for his five children—Tony, Karen, Albin, Sophie, and Lucie—was woven directly into his life’s work.

He proudly named each of his five hotel rooms after them. Just recently, in August 2025, Marston celebrated his 80th birthday surrounded by Laura, his children, and many grandchildren, for a day filled with the kind of togetherness that meant everything to him.

… traversing the world

Marston’s journey took him far from home before bringing him back to where he truly belonged. After completing his studies at Seychelles College, he spent 15 years in Melbourne, Australia, with his mother. But in 1978, he returned to Seychelles, drawn by his deep connection to home and the island of La Digue, where he would leave an indelible mark.

… dedicated to Seychelles’ future

Marston cared deeply about the future of Seychelles and wasn’t afraid to speak up when he believed it mattered. In 1998, he ran as an Independent Candidate for the La Digue (Inner Islands) elections. Later, in 2011, he announced his candidacy for the Presidency. While he ultimately did not file the necessary documentation on Nomination Day, he never shied away from political participation and always wore his colours of choice with pride during election seasons.

… a short romance with the Silver Screen

In addition to his many roles, Marston also had a brush with the silver screen. In 1985, he appeared in the film Robinson Crusoe, which was shot at Petite Anse and Anse Kerlan. It was a treasured memory he loved to share with friends and family, adding yet another layer to his colourful life story.

… a loving heart

Marston Saint Ange will be remembered as a man who lived joyfully, loved deeply, and brought people together. His true legacy lies in the love he poured into his family, the friendships he nurtured, and the countless happy memories he helped create.

As La Digue bids farewell to one of its most beloved sons, Marston’s spirit will live on in the family he adored, the guests he welcomed, and the vibrant island community he called home.

A biographical portrait of Alain St.Ange, exploring his journey from the Seychelles to the global stage and his philosophy on empowering the tourism industry through unity and private sector engagement.

In the world of international travel, few names carry as much weight as Alain St.Ange. A man whose career spans over four decades, he has become a definitive voice for destinations seeking to find their place on the global map. His philosophy is rooted in a simple but profound belief: that tourism is not merely an activity to be managed, but a vital industry that thrives only when the government and private sector walk hand-in-hand. Today, as the head of Saint Ange Consultancy, he continues to champion a human-centric approach to tourism, addressing the structural need for visibility and consolidation in regions ranging from mainland Africa to the ASEAN block.

From Operations to Strategic Direction

The journey of Alain St.Ange is one built on a foundation of operational grit and international exposure. His early years were shaped by rigorous hospitality training in Germany and France, providing him with a technical lens that he would later apply to national strategy. From managing hotels in the Seychelles, the Channel Islands, and Australia, his path evolved from the daily realities of guest satisfaction to the complexities of national governance.

The turning point came in 2009 when, after years in the private sector and the National Assembly, he was appointed Director of Marketing for the Seychelles Tourism Board. This role was the precursor to his tenure as CEO and eventually as the Minister for Tourism and Culture in 2012. His evolution was never about climbing a corporate ladder; it was a personal mission to reposition his home nation as a leading global destination by empowering the very people who form its front line.

A Defining Milestone

If one achievement stands as a testament to his impact, it is his work as the Seychelles Minister of Tourism. During this period, he is widely recognized for having “punched way above the weight” of the small island nation. One of his most innovative moves was the launch of the Carnaval International de Victoria in 2011, which transformed the Seychelles into an events-based destination and solidified its cultural diversity on the world stage. This milestone was not just about the spectacle; it was about creating a platform where the world could see the Seychelles as a vibrant, unified, and competitive player in the tourism market.

His View on Hospitality Today

For Alain St.Ange, the heart of hospitality lies in the recognition of the industry’s people. He believes that success is only possible when the private sector is empowered and obstacles—such as restrictive visa policies—are removed. His perspective is grounded in the idea that tourism should not be “bled with taxes” but nurtured to grow. He views the industry through a lens of collaboration, where the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands and similar regional bodies serve as essential vehicles for shared success.

The Challenge Ahead

Looking toward the future, the challenge lies in shifting the global mindset to recognize tourism as a formal industry rather than a secondary activity. He points to air access as a critical supporting facility that must be optimized to encourage travel. Furthermore, he emphasizes the need for unity among destinations, working alongside a supportive UN Tourism Organization to promote multi-center holiday options that benefit entire regions rather than isolated spots.

Leadership & Way of Working

The leadership style of Alain St.Ange is decidedly hands-on. He operates with a professional philosophy he calls the “Seychelles approach”—being a “friend of all and enemy of none.” This realism translates into a way of working that prioritizes direct engagement with teams and stakeholders. He avoids the detached nature of modern bureaucracy, preferring to be present and active in the consolidation and training efforts that help tourism boards thrive.

A Personal Note

His connection to the land and its history is deeply personal, a theme he explores in his autobiography, Alain St.Ange, My Journey. Whether serving in the National Assembly or standing as a presidential candidate, his actions are driven by a sense of duty to his community. He often reflects on the importance of unity with a guiding motto that has defined his regional work:

“The time has come not only for us all to say we are together, but to be seen together”.

Why This Voice Matters

The voice of Alain St.Ange matters because it bridges the gap between high-level policy and the human experience of travel. His values are not derived from textbooks but from a lifetime of service and a profound belief in the power of tourism to transform nations. As the industry faces new structural shifts, his grounded, reflective, and collaborative approach provides a necessary roadmap for sustainable and inclusive growth. His journey reminds us that true leadership in hospitality is measured by the outcomes achieved for the people who call a destination home.

The Seychelles National Assembly has confirmed the appointment of Alain St.Ange as Ambassador At Large for Seychelles.

St.Ange said that this appointment marks a new chapter not only in his distinguished career but for the nation he has long served. Nominated by President Patrick Herminie, and now confirmed by the Seychelles National Assembly, St.Ange steps into his new role carrying a wealth of experience gained from decades of dedicated work in tourism—a sector at the heart of Seychelles’ identity and prosperity.

He called it both a privilege and a chance to give back to the country that has shaped him. With a close-knit community of just over 100,000 people, St.Ange believes Seychelles must find strength in unity— harnessing talents from across the nation and rising above political divisions. For St.Ange, progress means leveraging the wisdom and commitment of all Seychellois for the benefit of the whole country.

With more than 40 years as an advocate for tourism, St.Ange’s name is synonymous with innovation and leadership. As the former CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, he was the driving force behind such initiatives as the internationally celebrated “Carnival International de Victoria.”

The event drew global attention to Seychelles, welcoming visitors worldwide and raising the nation’s profile as a premier travel destination. Throughout his career, St.Ange has championed the causes of sustainable tourism and local empowerment, insisting that growth must benefit the people of Seychelles year-round—not just during peak seasons.

As he takes on the role of Ambassador At Large, St.Ange is mindful of the responsibility to pass on his extensive knowledge and experience. Passionate about bridging generations, St.Ange is eager to mentor and inspire the next wave of Seychellois leaders.

“This role as Ambassador At Large is an opportunity to ensure that the knowledge, networks, and lessons I have amassed are not lost to history but are passed on to the next generation,” he reflected, highlighting that true leadership lies in the wisdom and value one brings, not in age.

Looking ahead, St.Ange expresses readiness and optimism. He views this appointment as the dawn of a new era of service—one focused on uniting the country, fostering collaboration, and solidifying Seychelles’ reputation as a resilient, progressive, and united nation on the global stage.

About Alain St.Ange

Alain St.Ange’s influence on the tourism world is internationally recognised. His distinguished career includes serving as the Seychelles Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports, and Marine and on the Executive Council of the UN World Tourism Organisation.

Celebrated for his innovative global strategies, he successfully elevated the international profile of Seychelles through landmark events and sustainable destination development.

His ongoing work through Saint Ange Consultancy continues to shape the direction of sustainable tourism across the globe. Today, he remains a guiding figure, committed to the growth of Seychelles and to mentoring the next generation of leaders.

Tourism is more than an industry; it is the lifeblood of economies, cultures, and communities worldwide. It touches every aspect of our lives; from the roads we travel to the warm greetings we receive at a destination. Yet, its potential remains untapped in many regions due to a lack of collaboration, ethical leadership, and sustainable practices.

As someone who has dedicated my career to this vital sector, I believe it is time for us to work together to consolidate tourism as a force for good – one that enriches not only economies but also the lives of people and the health of our planet.

The importance of tourism

Tourism is not just about airlines, hotels, or attractions. It is every single interaction a visitor has with a destination. It’s the public roads they travel, the reliability of electricity and water, the cleanliness of the streets, and the warmth of the local community.

When we invest in these areas for our visitors, we are also investing in a better quality of life for our local communities. It becomes a win-win. This understanding transforms our perspective: the entire country is the destination, and it must be ready to welcome the world.

However, many still ask, “How can tourism contribute more to the economy?” Too often, the answer reverts to imposing more taxes – killing the goose that lays the golden egg. Instead, we must focus on creating an environment where tourism can thrive sustainably, benefiting both visitors and locals.

Ethical leadership and sustainability

A tourism industry that excludes local communities or harms the natural environment is not only unethical – it is unsustainable. We have seen pristine coastlines overdeveloped without community input, leading to environmental degradation and the loss of the very charm that drew tourists in the first place.

Ethical leadership demands that we embrace sustainable tourism as our guiding principle. But sustainability is not a simple checklist to tick off during inspections. It must be woven into the fabric of the destination. This means genuinely involving local communities – not just as employees, but as partners and shareholders in development. When people have a stake in the industry, they become its most passionate guardians.

Countries like Bhutan and New Zealand provide inspiring examples. Bhutan’s high-value, low-impact tourism policy limits visitor numbers while prioritising cultural preservation and environmental protection. Similarly, New Zealand’s Tiaki principles encourage both visitors and locals to care for the land and honour Māori traditions. These models show that true success in tourism is measured not just by numbers but by the lasting positive impact on communities and culture.

Community involvement: A win-win approach

When we invest in tourism infrastructure, we are also investing in our people. Clean streets, reliable utilities, and well-maintained public spaces benefit both visitors and locals. This creates a virtuous cycle: happy residents make for welcoming hosts, and satisfied visitors are more likely to return.

Consider Costa Rica, a nation that built its global brand on ecotourism. The government made a conscious choice to protect its rainforests and biodiversity, empowering local communities to lead conservation efforts and run eco-lodges. Today, tourists flock there not just for the scenery but for an authentic experience rooted in respect for nature and culture.

Tourism diplomacy and cross-border cooperation

True tourism diplomacy happens when the public and private sectors work together as one. The private sector, as the eyes and ears of the industry, is often the first to notice problems and the quickest to act. Governments must listen to and respect these stakeholders, fostering a collaborative environment.

Tourism diplomacy also extends across borders. Countries can collaborate on cross-border eco-tourism initiatives, such as the transboundary parks in Southern Africa, which allow wildlife and local cultures to flourish while offering visitors a unified natural experience.

A notable example is the partnership between France and Morocco, where joint heritage conservation projects and tourism festivals celebrate shared history and promote intercultural dialogue. These initiatives not only preserve important cultural sites but also encourage deeper understanding and cooperation.

Air connectivity: The backbone of tourism

Air connectivity remains the foundation of tourism. Without it, the industry cannot flourish. The COVID-19 pandemic starkly reminded us of this reality when airlines stopped flying, and tourism ground to a halt.

To consolidate tourism, destinations must prioritise air access. This means fostering partnerships with airlines, reducing burdensome taxes, and ensuring that air travel remains accessible and sustainable.

A call to action

The path forward is clear. We must champion policies that put people and natural heritage first. Taxes and fees that stifle growth must be reconsidered, and the private sector must actively seek partnerships with local communities.

High-yield tourism is not about luxury; it is about optimising source markets and creating meaningful, sustainable experiences. When leaders understand this, they can build an industry that is not only profitable but also responsible, respectful, and regenerative.

Tourism has the power to transform lives, uplift communities, and preserve our planet’s most precious treasures. Together, let us champion a tourism industry that enriches everyone it touches. The future of tourism is in our hands – let’s make it a future we can all be proud of.

Alain St.Ange, renowned former Seychelles Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports, and Marine, inspired industry leaders at a recent Oxford University Leadership Forum with his keynote address on; “Ethical Leadership and Inner Governance in Tourism Diplomacy.”

In his address, St.Ange challenged the traditional definition of tourism, arguing that it extends far beyond hotels and airlines. He surmised that true tourism encompasses every interaction a visitor has with a destination, from infrastructure quality to public services. He stressed that investing in these areas for visitors simultaneously improves the quality of life for local populations, creating a mutually beneficial ecosystem.

A central pillar of the address was the concept of inner governance. St.Ange argued that ethical leadership requires managing with heart and prioritising local culture and people. He warned that tourism cannot be sustainable if local communities are sidelined or if the environment is degraded. Instead, he advocated for a model where communities are active shareholders in development, ensuring that the industry remains authentic and resilient.

He also highlighted the vital role of tourism diplomacy, specifically through strong public-private partnerships. He noted that the private sector acts as the “eyes and ears” of the industry and must be empowered to work alongside government bodies. By fostering collaboration between these sectors, destinations can better protect their investments and ensure long-term success.

St.Ange is a globally recognised figure in the tourism sector, celebrated for his innovative strategies that elevated Seychelles’ profile on the world stage. As CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, he launched the iconic “Carnival International de Victoria,” attracting participants globally and further established Seychelles as a must-visit destination. His global perspective on tourism ensured that Seychelles was a destination for everyone, from all corners of the earth.

His innovative strategies not only increased tourist arrivals but also led to substantial investments in the country’s tourism infrastructure, further solidifying Seychelles’ position as a premier travel destination.

Today, as head of Saint Ange Consultancy, he continues to shape the future of tourism, offering strategic guidance to international leaders on sustainable destination development.

It has been confirmed that Alain St.Ange, a candidate in the 2025 Seychelles Presidential Election, is preparing a new political history book that offers a first-hand account of his bid for State House, and an inside look at the realities of modern Seychellois politics.

The book, ‘Trials Of A Candidate – The Untold Story of the 2025 State House Race, is in collaboration with his daughter, Michelle St.Ange-Ebrahim, a lawyer, who is currently completing a PhD in Law. She will offer in-dept insights and analysis of the 2025 election from the perspective of a candidate, who entered the race challenging two entrenched political parties.

Drawing on personal experiences, campaign records, photographs, and legal and political analysis, the publication lifts the curtain on what St.Ange describes as the underbelly of Seychelles politics—the unspoken rules, structural imbalances, and pressures faced by those who challenge entrenched power.

“We have a story to tell, and we are telling it exactly as we lived it,” said Alain St.Ange. “This is not about making accusations. It is about documenting what it feels like to contest a national election from the outside. We were the underdogs, and this book allows the country to see—through facts, reflections, and lived experience—what that journey truly looked like,” he added.

The book is a commentary on local politics, building on Alain St.Ange’s former political books: Seychelles: What’s Next?; Seychelles, In Search of Democracy; Seychelles, The Cry of A People; and Alain St.Ange, My Journey – Life and Times in Politics.

Looking forward to the future in a rapidly developing political landscape, it explores the themes that shaped the 2025 election, including the continued role of money as a decisive factor in political success, the realities of campaign financing, and the barriers faced by independent and non-establishment candidates seeking to compete meaningfully.

The publication also confronts the challenges faced by women in politics, including female presidential and vice-presidential candidates. Despite Seychelles often being described as a matriarchal society, the book examines the disconnect between social structures and political power, highlighting the additional scrutiny, resistance, and systemic hurdles women encounter when attempting to emerge, lead, and be taken seriously within the political arena.

Alain St.Ange has indicated that he will now retire from active politics. He says he was called to action last year and answered that call with determination and resilience. He will continue to serve his country in other ways, while refocusing on his family and personal life.

“This has never been about personal ambition,” said St.Ange. “I have always sought to serve Seychelles in every stage of my life. I answered the call when it came, and I am proud of what we achieved. Now, I am ready to close this political chapter, to return to my family, and to continue serving my country in other ways,” he added.

Co-authored with Michelle St.Ange-Ebrahim, the work combines political narrative with legal context, carefully distinguishing between verifiable facts, personal observations, and reflective analysis. The authors emphasise that the publication is intended as a contribution to democratic discourse and as a historical record, rather than an attack on individuals.

More than a campaign chronicle, the book positions itself as a tell-all account of how power is experienced, contested, and defended in Seychelles—offering readers an unfiltered view of the political terrain through the eyes of those who dared to challenge it.

Following the outcomes of Seychelles September 2025 election, Lalyans Nouvo Sesel, as part of its review of the process and the development in the country, has restated its commitment to the unity, peace and progress of the country, urging its members to stay focus and committed to the ideals of the organisation.

This charge to its members were contained in the latest press statement from the group, which reads in full: ‘‘Lalyans Nouvo Sesel was founded on the principles of unity, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds and beliefs. Although we were not successful in forming our own government, we fully respect our members’ rights in their individual decisions and remain steadfast in our commitment to serving Seychelles.

We believe that through this collaborative approach, we can continue to make a meaningful impact for the betterment of our Nation. In light of these considerations, Lalyans Nouvo Sesel reaffirms its commitment to always place national interest above partisan concerns. At the same time, we recognize and respect that every Seychellois and all our party members have the right to make their own political choices in this second round of the presidential election which is a statement that echoed in all our electoral campaign. While we share our analysis and concerns with the public, we fully respect the individual decisions of all citizens.

Our aim remains to foster national unity, constructive dialogue, and solutions that safeguard the wellbeing of our people and the prosperity of our nation. Lalyans Nouvo Sesel will continue to engage responsibly in the political process, advocating for a stronger, fairer, and more united Seychelles.’’
